PITTSBURGH (WBC. PNG. UK) - Mylan Inc. said Wednesday it has reached a deal to buy into the world’s largest drugmaker, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NYSE: TASE), and will own 50 percent of the company in a strategic partnership with Pfizer Inc. for a total of $30 billion. Teva also owns rights to the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra from Pfizer, along with rights to the pharmaceutical giant’s generic version of Lipitor and its generic version of Lipitor, both of which are among the world’s top-selling drugs.
Shares of Teva in Hong Kong were down nearly 1 percent, or 0.2 percent, to $15.25 in early trading on Wednesday. Teva, which makes Teva Sildenafil, fell more than 2 percent to $30.18 in early trading on Wednesday.
Pfizer said that Teva “will not be transferring or parting” it in connection with the deal to Teva. Pfizer said it will pay Teva $2.4 billion for the rights and other royalties, along with $6.2 billion in cash and other proceeds from the deal.
Pfizer said in a statement that the deal “continues and resolves” the litigation over the sale of the company’s patent, the patents covering Viagra, Lipitor and other patents covering the erectile dysfunction drug.
